Andy's Nominee For Best Picture Oscar
My nominee for the Oscar for Best Picture? Without a doubt it must be Francesca Le's ButtQuest #2. Told in a series of entertaining and emotionally moving vignettes, this movie follows five women as they face a series of individual situations of growth (primarily spiritual growth I believe; this is based on the number of times they say "Oh God, yes, Oh God" or otherwise invite the Lord into their lives). The male actors bring a iron determination to help usher these young women into full blossom. The cinematography is excellent; the cameras capture the feelings of the moment with remarkably explicit candor. Most of the film is devoted to a penetrating backdoor exploration of the lives of these amazing women, in fact that is the primary storyline. The cast is a multicultural mix featuring several latinas, an african-american girl, an asian woman and mostly white men. Like all great films, this one can be enjoyed at many levels. I thought it was remarkably clever of producer and director Francesca Le (she also perfoms in this film - this woman does everything and I do mean everything) to work in a consistent subtle political subtext. In the end I found myself amazed and exhausted by this film. This film accurately captures the spirit of 2004: a series of brutal and crass self-serving white men (with a token african-american guy thrown in) who assfuck the entire nation; particularly minorities and women.
