Thoughts On The Iraqi Elections

I’m grateful that the elections in Iraq went off so smoothly. I have to admit that my knowledge of the workings of state over there are insufficient for me to be able to tell if the low levels of Sunni turnout are the disaster some are predicting. I really hope not. Those folks, and our soldiers, could use some peace. It appears that Ayatollah Sistani’s Shiite slate did well, if so, maybe he will find ways to include significant Sunni representation in government and that will help keep things calm.

It is still weird for me to think of an Ayatollah from Iran as a good guy. I really did not understand as a child that Ayatollah was a title, not a name.

Hopefully this is and indication of things to come and maybe our soldiers can come home soon.

Miracles can happen. I think one did this past Sunday.
